Marley Watkins and Tom Lawrence have both scored for fun from midfield this season. Will Ipswich Town replace the latter with the former?

With Daily Mail reports suggesting loan star Tom Lawrence could have his impressive spell at Portman Road cut short, Ipswich Town may have already lined up a more than respectable replacement, as reported by Sky Sports.

Former Manchester United youngster Lawrence has proved nothing short of inspirational for McCarthy’s side this season though his excellent performances, and an array of jaw-dropping goals, appear to have come at a cost.

The Mail reports that North East rivals Newcastle United and Sunderland are heading the list of clubs aiming to sign the attacking midfielder from parent club Leicester City before the February deadline, meaning Ipswich could be forced to bid farewell to their stand-out player midway through his season-long loan.

However, with Barnsley’s six goal Marley Watkins handing in a transfer request to deepen the crisis at Oakwell, Ipswich could take full advantage and replace their quick-footed wondergoal merchant.

Sky Sports reports that Mick McCarthy is a keen admirer of the 26-year-old, who has added seven assists to his impressive goal tally this season. Consequently, his output actually exceeds that of the in-form, headline-grabbing Lawrence.

Furthermore, with Watkins’ contract running out at the end of the season, he should be available at a knockdown price. Talk about softening the blow.
