It’s been almost a month since Lucas Torreira returned to Arsenal training.
The Uruguay international picked up an ankle injury in an FA Cup win over Portsmouth in March but hasn’t been seen since.
Arsenal confirmed on May 30 via their official website that the former Sampdoria midfielder had returned to Mikel Arteta’s training at London Colney.
But fast forward 29 days and although Torreira is still training, he hasn’t made any of the three 20-man squads that Arteta has named since the Premier League returned 11 days ago.
However, could that change today?
The Gunners take on Sheffield United in an FA Cup quarter-final and with questions over Mateo Guendouzi’s future and attitude, and Granit Xhaka only back from injury himself, it’s plausible that Torreira has built up enough fitness to at least make the Spaniard’s squad this afternoon.
Torreira, a £27 million signing in 2018, was one of Arsenal’s best players last season and if he can get back to that standard between now and the end of the campaign, it could help the North Londoners’ quest for silverware.
This season is all about the FA Cup for the Emirates Stadium club, who are 11 points adrift of the Champions League qualification places with seven games to go, and the sooner Torreira is fully fit, the better their chances of salvaging something from an otherwise dismal season.
