Alfredo Morelos has taken like a duck to water after swapping Finnish football for the Scottish Premiership with Rangers.
It’s been far too long since Rangers could call upon a striker with the predatory instincts of Alfredo Morelos.
The Colombian was hardly a household name when he arrived at Ibrox in the summer but it’s fair to say he has already made his presence felt in his first few weeks in Scottish football.
Morelos has played seven times in Rangers colours and scored an impressive five goals, including a lethal double in last weekend’s 3-1 win at Ross County.
Though perhaps the 21-year-old’s golden touch should not come as a surprise. After all, he moved to Rangers this summer on the back of a prolific spell in Finland with HJK Helsinki, form that caught the eye of Gers coach and former Finnish international Jonathan Johansson.
After moving from his native Colombia in 2016, Morelos plundered an eye-catching 46 goals in 62 games in Scandinavia and he has maintained that purple patch since swapping Helsinki for Glasgow this summer. All in all, Morelos is shaping up to be Rangers’ most exciting striker signing since a certain Nikica Jelavic arrived at Ibrox.
Worth the wait?
The 24-year-old Croatian was certainly a risky addition, costing a hefty £4 million from Rapid Vienna (BBC), but justified his fee in style with 36 goals in 56 games before moving to Everton a year-and-a-half on for a £2 million profit.
And Morelos already looks like an equally inspired signing, with potential by the bucketload and brought in from a market that tends to be ignored.
Rangers have been worryingly reliant upon 37-year-old Kenny Miller in the last few years but Morelos’ arrival suggests supporters should stock up on the strepsils – they’ll be cheering a few goals this season.
