The Leeds United managerial favourite has worked with the out of favour Newcastle United player before.
Prospective Leeds United boss Fernando Hierro
Real Madrid legend Fernando Hierro has emerged as the shock bookies favourite to become Leeds United’s next manager.
The 49-year-old recently left Spanish second tier side Real Oviedo after leading them to eighth this past season.
As well as his year-long spell in Asturias, Hierro also worked as Real Madrid’s assistant and was director of football at Malaga, giving him an enviable list of contacts on which to call should he arrive at Leeds.
And with a current Newcastle United player among them, could a transfer from St James’ Park to Elland Road be on the cards?
Which Newcastle player?
Newcastle United defender Jesus Gamez [right]
Jesus Gamez, who was at Malaga during Hierro’s time in Andalusia. He moved to Newcastle a year ago on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid, and should also be known to Whites and former Malaga B coach Pep Clotet.
Why would Leeds want him?
Former Leeds United loanee Kyle Bartley
Though Gamez is more commonly found on the right of a back four, he is equally capable on the left and in the centre – two positions in which Leeds are expected to strengthen this summer, having [effectively] lost Charlie Taylor and Kyle Bartley. He’s also a Champions League runner-up.
Is he available?
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez
It’s more than likely, after the 32-year-old made just seven appearances in his debut campaign for the Magpies. Newcastle are expected to strengthen across their back line this summer, leaving Gamez’s future looking even more bleak with his contract due to expire at the end of the coming campaign.
Would Newcastle’s Jesus Gamez be a good acquisition for Leeds?
