Troy Parrott has made a disappointing start to the 2022-23 campaign after the striker left Tottenham on loan to join Preston – and he has been unable to turn his form around for Ireland as Irish media criticised him against Armenia.

Parrott, 20, starred for MK Dons last season – having a hand in 17 goals. But this time around, he has struggled having moved to Preston – in the Championship. Preston themselves have only scored three goals in 10 Championship games.

But Parrott has hardly contributed, netting only once in 12 games – the goal coming in the Carabao Cup. He had the chance to reignite some confidence, for Ireland. Against Scotland, he had a glorious chance with the score at 1-1.

But he fluffed his lines. Against Armenia, Ireland left it late to win 3-2 – but Parrott was poor once again. He lasted 76 minutes for Stephen Kenny’s side but he was below par. The Irish Times gave him 6/10, and a verdict on his display.

“There will have to come a point where he brings more than energy and dutiful running. Tough game for him with Armenia camped on the edge of the box but never got a sight of goal and looks a player out of sorts,” the Times said.

Another performance where Parrott looked as if he is lacking in confidence. Against Scotland, his chance to put Kenny’s men ahead with the scoreline reading 1-1 was one where he should have scored. But the moment got to him.

Against Armenia, he simply found it impossible to impact the game. Of course, his work rate was still eye-catching. But that work rate is meaningless if he cannot combine it with any kind of end product – or numbers in the final third.
