Jeff Hendrick was awarded his 72nd cap for Ireland on Wednesday night but Stephen Kenny’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ukraine – and Irish media outlet The Examiner were very critical of the Newcastle midfielder.
Hendrick, 30, has endured a dismal spell at Newcastle. Joining the club under Steve Bruce’s tenure in 2020, he has managed just 27 appearances in two seasons. He went on loan to QPR in January, playing 11 times.
He remains an important part of the Ireland set-up – but after turning the corner, Kenny’s side have performed a u-turn in the last few days. After eight games unbeaten, they have lost their last two outings.

A woeful 1-0 loss to Armenia on Saturday was followed up by a 1-0 loss to Ukraine – Viktor Tsygankov’s free-kick curling past Caoimhin Kelleher. Hendrick saw out the entire 90, but was given a 4/10 rating by the Examiner.
“Struggled from early in the first half as the Ukrainian duo of Sydorchuk and Shaparenko ran the midfield show. His passing wasn’t up to scratch. The Newcastle man’s place in the first 11 must now be under threat.”

A poor season, summed up by Hendrick. He looked off the pace and like a player that has struggled with match fitness. Unsurprising perhaps, against a strong Ukraine midfield – and given Hendrick only played 15 times in 21-22.
His future at Newcastle is certainly in doubt. While he has a contract, worth £40,000 a week (Spotrac), he will certainly be on the chopping block. He has even said himself he might not play for Newcastle again.
Perhaps it is just what he needs. A step back into the Championship to reinvigorate his career, will in-turn, rejuvenate his performances in an Ireland shirt. Still only 30, he has time on his side.
