Aston Villa’s Scott Hogan didn’t enjoy the greatest evening for Ireland.

Mick McCarthy’s second spell as Republic of Ireland boss remains unconvincing so far, after a 2-0 home win over Gibraltar on Monday night.
The 1-1 draw with Denmark on Friday was a decent result, and Monday’s visit of Gibraltar offered Ireland the chance to move past their narrow 1-0 win over them in March with a stronger result.
However, it was more of the same from Ireland, who went ahead of Joseph Chipolina put through his own net, handing Ireland the lead at the Aviva Stadium.
The minnows kept frustrating Ireland though, and only managed to make it 2-0 in injury time when Robbie Brady struck for the hosts.
Fans remain a little unsure about McCarthy, but after keeping three clean sheets in four games so far, he’s at least kept up a strong defensive record.
The pressure will now be on attacking players to thrive under McCarthy, as Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan failed to really seize his chance in the Ireland line-up last night.

Hogan has struggled in general since joining Villa in January 2017, and he again failed to find the net for Ireland, leading to fans on Twitter slating his performance.
Some thought Hogan was ‘absolutely clueless’ in the Ireland attack, blasting him as terrible whilst suggesting that he should never play for Ireland again if he can’t even score against Gibraltar.
