West Ham United seemingly have a conveyor belt of England-born midfielders who end up turning out for the Republic of Ireland Under-21’s.
Declan Rice is the highest profile case, especially given that he chose to switch his allegiance away from Ireland in order to play for England.
Josh Cullen is another case, and already has three senior caps for Ireland. Despite impressing on loan at Charlton Athletic, West Ham have now sold him to Anderlecht.
There is another case though, as Conor Coventry is earning praise for his development with the Ireland Under-21’s.
The 20-year-old was born in London but qualifies for Ireland through his Irish mother, and now has 10 Under-21 caps despite playing just three times for West Ham.
Coventry will hope to have a bright future in the first team like Rice rather than having to move on like Cullen, and he now received major praise.
The Irish FA put together some stats on Coventry’s Under-21 campaign, noting that he has racked up 42 interceptions and three assists in just seven games, showing that he can be creative whilst doing the dirty work.
Ireland and West Ham fans both took to Twitter to hail Coventry, branding him a ‘baller’ and a ‘serious talent’.
Others thing he has massive potential, and deserves to be playing for West Ham this season based off his displays for Ireland’s Under-21’s; only time will tell whether that happens.
