Ipswich Town youngster Monty Patterson will be hoping to break into Mick McCarthy’s plans after scoring his first goal for New Zealand on international duty.

Patterson finds himself in an unusal situation of being a regular in the New Zealand side despite not making a senior appearance for Ipswich.

The attacker has won seven caps for his country after breaking into All Whites coach Anthony Hudson’s plans last summer and he was part of the squad that won the Oceania Football Confederation Nations Cup.

Patterson was called up for this month’s friendlies with Mexico and the United States and he celebrated winning his seventh cap with his first goal for his country with the equaliser in the 1-1 draw with the USA in Washington.

The 19-year-old came to the attention of Ipswich when playing in New Zealand junior side Eastern Suburbs and he joined the Championship club in 2013 after impressing on trial at Portman Road.

Patterson, who can play out wide or as a striker, saw his progress at Ipswich halted last season after seven months out with a serious ankle injury before returning to action for Ipswich’s Under 21 in the closing weeks of the campaign.

Ipswich are the joint lowest goalscorers in the Championship so far this season and Patterson off the back of his international heroics could offer McCarthy more options as he looks to bolster his side’s firepower.
