Rangers sold Joe Garner to Championship side Ipswich Town this summer before buying Eduardo Herrera in his place.

One of the first priorities on Pedro Caixinha’s to-do list at Rangers in the summer was to find the club a reliable goalscorer. Joe Garner, who joined from Preston North End for £1.8 million (Daily Record), simply did not cut the mustard and the Ibrox giants needed better if they were to close the gap at the top of the league.
It’s fair to say Eduardo Herrera, however, who joined from Mexican outfit Pumas for £1.5 million (Daily Record), has not quite lived up to expectations. And the fact he has been comfortable outperformed by the man he replaced in Rangers’ squad does not sate the disappointment surrounding his below-par displays.

In eight appearances, Herrera has scored just twice for Rangers – stark contrast to the form of fellow summer arrival Alfredo Morelos. While the Mexican international clearly needs time to settle to a new culture and a new league, his slow start will still have raised concerns about whether he was the man Rangers needed.
Garner, meanwhile, is in far more impressive form in new surroundings. He has four goals in 10 Championship appearances for an Ipswich Town side defying expectations with a fine start to the 2017/18 campaign.

The hard-working striker has been questioned for his goalscoring record in the second tier, having been at his best in League One, but is on track to comfortably surpass his best ever Championship tally of six.
His total of seven in 31 games for Rangers last season should also be beaten sooner rather than later.
And while Garner may never have fit Rangers’ style of play, it appears that the club have not done a great job finding a striker who would.
