Joe Garner could be let go by Rangers at half the price they signed him for – and Ipswich Town may take the 28-year-old off their hands.
Rangers’ Joe Garner
It’s not often that Ipswich Town break the million pound barrier in the transfer market. After all, manager Mick McCarthy has been forced to rely heavily upon free agents and short-term loans in recent seasons.
Therefore, you could forgive fans for being a little concerned with the East Anglian Daily Times suggesting that Ipswich will pay £1 million for Rangers misfit Joe Garner this summer.
The fact that the 28-year-old striker cost the Ibrox giants almost double that just 12 months ago when moving from Preston North End should ring a few alarm bells. Scoring just seven goals in 31 Scottish Premiership appearances, Garner’s tendency to rely on perspiration over inspiration meant a number of Rangers supporters were quick to lose faith.
Garner’s lack of goals
Furthermore, although Garner scored at a prolific rate to fire Preston into the Championship in 2015, his record in the second tier leaves a lot to be desired. In 41 games across 2015/16, the hard-working forward hit the back of the net just six times.
In previous spells in the Championship at Nottingham Forest, Scunthorpe United and Watford, Garner’s record reads 90 games and 16 goals.

Now, Ipswich are a side in need of a reliable goalscorer with none of their players hitting double figures in the league last season. Top scorer with just nine, Tom Lawrence has now returned to Leicester City following the expiry of his loan.
However, there’s little reason to suggest Garner is the man Ipswich have been crying out for.
