Ipswich Town assistant manager Matt Gill claims Paul Lambert is a better manager now than when he was at rivals Norwich City despite his fall from the top-flight, Eastern Daily Press report.

“He [Paul Lambert] is brilliant with people and a vastly experienced manager who has worked at some big clubs and has travelled around to see how other people work. I’m sure he’s a better manager now than he was at Norwich because he can’t not be, given the experiences he’s had,” former Norwich U23 boss Gill explained.

Lambert was once regarded as one of the best young managers in English football after guiding Norwich from League One to the Premier League following back-to-back promotions.

In his first season in the top-flight, he comfortably kept the Canaries up and gave them a platform to establish themselves for several years as a Premier League side.

But when the Aston Villa job became vacant, Lambert opted to leave Carrow Road for a deemed bigger club though he perhaps was unaware of what he was taking on with the Midlands club on the decline.

Lambert lasted two-and-a-half seasons at Villa Park before being dismissed with Villa in the bottom three, and he has since had short spells at Blackburn Rovers, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Stoke City.

The former Celtic midfielder never had it as good as when he was at Norwich, and with hindsight leaving the Norfolk club was a mistake as he now finds himself taking over Ipswich who are bottom of the Championship.

Gill’s comments are without doubt debatable, and without pulling off a minor miracle with the Tractor Boys, Lambert will find himself doing full circle and back in League One at Portman Road.
