Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy says Arsenal aren’t willing to stump up the cash to sign defender Tyrone Mings.
Recent reports have linked Arsenal with a £10m move to sign Ipswich Town defender Tyrone Mings in recent weeks, but manager Mick McCarthy told press today that Arsenal aren’t prepared to pay up for the 21-year-old defender, as reported by the East Anglian Daily Times.
“They haven’t got enough money. Well, they might have enough money but they wouldn’t be prepared to pay it. He’s not going anywhere. You might as well hear that from me. He’s not,” said McCarthy.
“He’s a really good player and he’s not going anywhere. He might as well hear that as well. That’s always the case, they think ‘is it going to happen, isn’t it going to happen?’ Why would he not want to try and get promoted with us? We’re in a really good position,” he added.
Mings, 21, was on the books at Southampton as a teenager, but appears to have been one of the few youth players to have slipped the Saints’ net in recent years.
After spells in non-league with Yate Town and Chippenham Town, Ipswich paid up just £10,000 to bring Mings to Portman Road – and that now looks like a bargain.
The 6ft 3in defender has been a star at left back for the Tractor Boys, making 20 starts this season for the Championship high-flyers.
Arsenal need defenders this month given the lack of depth available to Arsene Wenger, but Chelsea and Stoke City have also been linked with moves to sign him.
McCarthy clearly wants to keep the youngster in Suffolk, but if Arsenal don’t want to pay up for him, another team may well do.
