Mick McCarthy has admitted to Ipswich Player HD (via the club’s official website) that Leeds United deserved their 1-0 win on Saturday and singled out Chris Wood for additional praise.

The Whites secured their fourth consecutive win in all competitions as Wood’s goal 10 minutes before the break ensured that United moved themselves into the top half of the table for the first time.

And the Tractor Boys boss – whose side fell below Leeds in the table following the contest – conceded that the right team won, before admitting that the New Zealand international and former Ipswich Town loanee was simply too good for them on the day.

“Leeds deserved the win, no doubt,” he told Ipswich Player HD (via club’s official website).

“Sometimes you have to give the opposition credit and they played very well. They were better than us all over the pitch.

“Chris Wood was excellent. He was outstanding for them. He was lean and mean. When we had him he was nowhere near as fit at as that.

“He was the big difference really. They could play it up to him and he could hold it up. He won headers. He dominated our centre-backs and that doesn’t happen often.”

While most of Wood’s goals have been real poacher efforts rather than the kind of sublime finish that led Leeds to a victory over Derby County last season – though, his overhead kick against Fulham was hugely impressive – there is no question that his contribution has been crucial to the turnaround in their fortunes.

The forward has scored seven times in just 11 games this term in all competitions, including four in his last four, to surely ease much of the pressure on Garry Monk’s shoulders.

His tally highlights that he is continuing to put himself in the right position to get on the end of opportunities. And more importantly for the Peacocks, he is frequently taking those chances.
