International says he lost his voice last night because he had to shout at Tottenham star so much

Shane Duffy has told Balls.IE that he lost his voice shouting at Tottenham Hotspur’s Matt Doherty yesterday.

Doherty was selected to start for Ireland in the unfamiliar position of central defender, and the Spurs man actually performed well in the position.

Ireland picked up a 0-0 draw with Wales yesterday, and Duffy admitted after the match that he really had to talk the Spurs man through the game.

“I thought he was brilliant,” Duffy said. “He was great, he did everything that he had to do. He knows the defensive side of the game and he’s getting better every game as well.

“He fit in great…

“My voice is gone shouting at him! Listen, it’s a completely different role to what he’s played before.

“It’s different, but it’s good for us that we know we can play him there. Hopefully we don’t need him there because we would rather have him at right back.

“He did a job for us, kept a clean sheet, and I thought he was great. So fair play to him.”

Doherty’s apparent ability to play at centre-back could come in handy for Spurs over the course of the season.

Although Jose Mourinho won’t want to be forced into playing the right-back out of position, his versatility could be useful.

Tottenham left-back Ben Davies can also play in central defence if required, which adds to the cover Spurs have in the position.

Doherty is likely to be back in his familiar position of right-back at the weekend, when Tottenham take on West Ham United in Premier League action.
