Jaap Stam’s side cruised past a flying Leeds United at the weekend, and further strengthened their play-off grip.
Reading’s Yann Kermorgant celebrates scoring their first goal with team mates
Jaap Stam’s Reading seemed a new side following their 1-0 victory over play-off rivals Leeds United at the weekend, and it seemed the international break significantly aided the Royals.
Following a damaging 3-0 defeat to Preston North End and a highly fortunate 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday, questions were asked about Reading’s play-off credentials prior to the two week break in play.
However, any lingering doubts were banished after an eerily comfortable 1-0 win over Leeds United, which could have been so much more comfortable for Stam’s side.
Yann Kermorgant racked up his 11th Championship goal this season, but Garath McCleary and Roy Beerens both should have extended their lead, while Leeds offered very little in return.
Reading manager Jaap Stam
The performance would have pleased Stam as much as the result did, as it would have enhanced his belief in his side that they can do something special in the play-offs.
While before that seemed far from certain going by recent shaky performances, it appears as if the international break may have come at the perfect time for a Reading side chasing a Premier League return following relegation in 2013.
