Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, Phil Hay has shared an update on how the higher-ups at Leeds feel about Marcelo Bielsa amid United’s poor run of form.
It’s no secret that Leeds haven’t been at their best this season. They’ve won just two league games so far and they’re dangerously close to the relegation zone.
Any team in this position would usually be asking questions of their manager, especially after finishing ninth last season, but according to Hay, those behind the scenes at Leeds still have faith in Bielsa.
What’s been said?
Hay shared what he knows about the board’s view of Bielsa.
“In terms of the confidence about whether or not he can get a leash on this and bring it under control. There certainly haven’t been any questions asked about him internally, his position is rock solid at Leeds and I think it’s one of those scenarios where poor form can’t go on forever and if poor form does seem like it’s going on forever, you have questions to ask and decisions to make,” Hay said.
“But his team is so specific in the way they play, it’s been set up in his image, probably to a greater extent than any other team in the league, it really is one man’s idea of how football should be played, so changing coach and shifting from Bielsa in the middle of a season would be a massive task and not something anyone wants to do.”

Deserves time
If any manager in the Premier League deserves time to turn around his team’s fortunes, it’s Bielsa.
The Argentine has performed miracles at Leeds, and while they have regressed this season, it’s still hard to imagine any manager getting more out of this group of players.
Of course, as Hay says, this poor form can’t go on forever, but just 10 games into the season, this isn’t the time to be questioning the manager.
