Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has been speaking about Steven Gerrard after he was appointed at Aston Villa.
The 41-year-old is the new Villa gaffer, but things could very easily have gone in a different direction for Gerrard.
Indeed, according to Castles, Gerrard held discussions about the Newcastle United job, but he turned the Magpies down due to the lack of coherent structure at the club.

Castles shared what he knows about Gerrard.
“Interestingly, Steven Gerrard was one of the individuals that Newcastle United had high on their list, they did have contact with him and made a proposition for him to become the new manager of the club, but Gerrard backed away from that job because he felt it was too much of a jump into the dark. He didn’t know who he would be working with, he didn’t know the structure of the club and there you have a demonstration of a coach who is making rational long-term decisions with a career goal in mind,” Castles said.
Good decision
As Castles says, Gerrard has a career goal in mind, and if he wants to achieve that goal, he needs to steer clear of clubs like Newcastle.
Yes, the Magpies have an exciting future ahead of them, but they have a questionable playing squad and even the best manager could be vulnerable to underachievement at St James’ Park.
Gerrard’s goal is seemingly to become Liverpool manager, but his best route to achieving that goal isn’t to take risky jobs such as the role at Newcastle.
