Newcastle United are still looking to get Eddie Howe in as their next manager before the weekend, Keith Downie has told Sky Sports News.

Eddie Howe to Newcastle?

Howe has been continuing to talk to Newcastle today, and he appears to be the club’s first choice now.

Newcastle initially went for Unai Emery but that move fell through at the last minute with the Spaniard ultimately deciding to stick with Villarreal.

With Newcastle having a game on Saturday against Brighton & Hove Albion on the horizon it had been expected that Graeme Jones would continue to take temporary charge.

However, Downie’s latest report suggests that Newcastle are still looking to get the appointment sorted in the next 24 hours.

“He’s desperate to get back in [to work]. He is keen to get back involved,” the Sky reporter said live from St. James’ Park.

“Those talks are taking place and Newcastle are keen to get someone in before the weekend.

“Whether they’re able to or not remains the big question.

“It will be interesting to see if Newcastle can rush something through until then. They are in a situation now where they know they need to make an appointment soon.”

Fast start needed

If Howe does join Newcastle he will at least know some members of their squad.

The 43-year-old has worked with the likes of Matt Ritchie, Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson before, when he was at Bournemouth.

He would be under pressure to make a fast start at St. James’ Park too.

Newcastle currently sit in 19th place in the Premier League table and are still winless, which means that whoever takes over will have to put an effective system in place quickly if the Magpies are to avoid the drop.
