Rapid Vienna sporting director Zoran Barisic has told Spox he isn’t surprised to see Rangers and other clubs express an interest in prolific centre-forward Taxiarchis Fountas.

On paper at least, Steven Gerrard’s striking options are the stuff of dreams for most Premiership bosses.

But look a little closer and everything isn’t quite as rosy as it seems.

There’s still a chance Alfredo Morelos could depart before the October deadline, with Gerrard admitting recently the Colombian’s head had been turned by incessant speculation.

Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten are both new to the Scottish game, while Jermain Defoe will turn 38 in October and has suffered his fair share of injuries of late.

With that in mind, reports claiming Rangers are interested in the £4 million-rated Greek international aren’t as strange as they may initially appear (Sport24).

And, according to Barisic, it was only a matter of time before Fountas fired his way into the gossip columns.

“Taxi can be used in all offensive positions and is therefore interesting for many clubs and coaches,” Barisic says of Fountas, who can play through the middle or wide on the left or right.

“Everything is open, most things are going on behind the scenes. It will not be quiet again until 6 October (when the window closes).”

Fountas burst on to the scene with 20 goals in 27 games last season and has started the current campaign in style too – hitting the net five times in five matches.

While one more striker may feel like overkill, Rangers need all the help they can get if they’re to stop Celtic’s ten-in-a-row dreams from becoming a reality.
