The Belgian has got his career back on track with Brighton and Hove Albion but will leave West Brom this summer – and Celtic may need a left-back.
Sebastian Pocognoli was probably quite relieved to see Tony Pulis rock up at West Brom in January 2015 with a six-point plan for survival. The Baggies were in freefall under Alan Irvine so the Welshman, who has famously never suffered relegation in 25 years of management, appeared the perfect appointment on paper.
And so it has proved. While fans remain divided by his industrious playing style, the fact that West Brom are currently eighth and enjoying their finest ever Premier League campaign means even the most noble of purists have been forced to doff their Trilbies.
However, little did he know it at the time but rampaging left-back Pocognoli would become a fall guy for the new regime, alongside Jason Davidson and Christian Gamboa. Pulis’ preference for a sturdy, flat back four with centre-halves taking up the wide roles means there was no space in the squad for the Belgian.
Fortunately, the 13-time international has demonstrated his worth on loan at Championship pacesetters Brighton and Hove Albion, making 15 largely impressive appearances in an injury hit campaign. But the fact that his contract runs out at the end of the season means he could be on the lookout for new employment.
But perhaps Pocognoli could discover an opportunity at Celtic. According to the Evening Times, The Bhoys were interested in the former Hannover flyer in the summer of 2015 and, two years on, they could be forced into the market for a left-back again.
As it stands, experienced Honduran Emilio Izaguirre is out of contract at the end of the season so Celtic could be on the lookout for back-up to Kieran Tierney who, despite reported Premier League interest, will likely remain at Parkhead.
Therefore, Pocognoli could be quite an attractive alternative. Especially on a free.
