Tottenham Hotspur were interested in Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher but did not bid for him on deadline day.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano.

One report from the Daily Mail claimed that Tottenham made a £40m offer for Conor Gallagher, but the Italian journalist has disputed that. He wrote on Twitter: “Understand Tottenham did not send any formal bid for Conor Gallagher on Deadline Day. Interest was there but no £40m proposal despite reports.”

Whether Spurs submitted a £40m proposal for Gallagher or not, it is unlikely that amount of money would have been enough to bring him to north London.

Back in July, Romano stated that Chelsea wanted at least £50m for the 23-year-old when West Ham United came knocking.

Tottenham still had a productive transfer window

While Tottenham were unable to land Gallagher, Ange Postecoglou will still be pleased with the business the north London club managed to do.

Spurs brought in James Maddison, who has made an immediate impact. In four Premier League games, the former Leicester City man has scored two goals and provided two assists.

New goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is also doing a good job between the sticks right now. His save percentage of 84.2% is currently the third highest in the division (FBref).

Gallagher could have been a superb addition to Postecoglou’s squad. He is a midfielder who is familiar with the Premier League and brings plenty of energy to the pitch.

“Conor rarely if ever seems to tire,” Chelsea legend Pat Nevin wrote in a column for the Blues’ official website earlier this year.

However, missing out on the England international will probably not be the difference between success and failure for Tottenham this season.
