Former Manchester United and Everton boss David Moyes has recently been linked with the manager’s job at Inter Milan, but Erick Thohir – Inter Milan’s owner – insists current boss Walter Mazzarri’s job is safe.
At the weekend, after Internazionale’s 1-0 win over Cesena, Erick Thohir seemingly gave current manager Walter Mazzarri an ultimatum by saying: ‘’We will see in the next two games. We want to give him another chance.’’
However, Thohir told reporters on Monday that his words were misinterpreted and Mazzarri had his full backing.
‘’My words were misinterpreted,’’ Thohir explained to reporters. ‘’I firmly believe in the work of the coach, the team and the future of this project.
‘’Nobody has given an ultimatum to Mazzarri although, of course, the results are important. Evidently, my words were poorly understood.
‘’I was very happy indeed with the win against Cesena and the character shown by the team.’’
Despite the comments of the Italian supremo, rumours regarding the future of Mazzarri and who may replace him continue to one of the most debated football-related topics at the moment with both former Manchester City and United bosses being named.
David Moyes, who recently commented on his desire to get back into management, has been linked with the post alongside Roberto Mancini, who has enjoyed success with Inter Milan in the past.
Yesterday, the Mail on Sunday reported that David Moyes is on the shortlist of potential replacements for Mazzarri at Inter, and Moyes himself would be interested after making it clear that coaching abroad would appeal to him.
The 51-year-old will be keen to rebuild his broken reputation and put the farce of his spell at Old Trafford behind him, and Inter Milan could offer the perfect platform for him should they come calling.
Internazionale currently sit on 12 points in 8th position in Serie A; 10 points behind leaders Juventus and seven points behind second placed Roma.
Mazzarri and his men will host fourth placed Sampdoria on Wednesday night in what could prove to be a huge game for the former Napoli manager.
A win would see Inter with a points return of 15 from their opening nine games, possibly leaving them on the same amount of points as rivals AC Milan should they lose to Cagliari. However, a loss could put the writing on the wall for Mazzarri as it could potentially see them drop into the bottom half.
