Tim Leiweke has lauded Inter Miami as one of the biggest soccer clubs on the planet after winning Lionel Messi’s signature this summer.
Speaking to the Athletic, the former Anschutz Entertainment Group executive and a key figurehead behind MLS’ Designated Player role praised how the Florida club pursued the Argentine superstar, a chase that took the club the best part of two years.
Managing owner Jorge Mas has earned widespread acclaim from MLS supporters and officials for the work the Florida-based businessman put in to bring MLS to Inter Miami, with the sporting legend set to be unveiled as a Heron later this week.

Indeed, the Herons’ international and domestic profile has increased massively since Messi was announced last month. And the 36-year-old’s arrival could now be viewed by some as Inter Miami being one of the biggest clubs in all of soccer.
Leiweke said: “His [Jorge Mas] team will break through now. Miami will now be one of the most important franchises not just in the league, not just in the marketplace, but on the planet. Brilliant. A stroke of genius, but it takes guts. He stayed at it and chewed on it for two years. Gutsy, gutsy, gutsy.”
Inter Miami could now have a platform to become of the biggest franchises in sports

One signing can transform a club in soccer, and for Inter Miami, Messi’s pending arrival could do just that for the MLS side, who could now be on the path to becoming one of the most recognizable teams in all of sports because of this one deal.
Mas deserves a lot of credit for the work he has done in getting Messi to Florida. And should the Argentine superstar deliver, Inter Miami could soon become one of the great teams in soccer that have a huge international audience and prestige.
