Jamaal Lascelles has been speaking to the Daily Mail about what life at Newcastle is like under Eddie Howe.

By the sounds of it, the 28-year-old is really enjoying himself under the former Bournemouth boss, who has reenergised the Magpies.

Interestingly, Lascelles gave some insight into the changes Howe has made on the training ground, where there was a special mention for Dwight Gayle.

What’s the story?

Well, Lascelles revealed that the £10m forward is actually the hardest worker in training at Little Benton.

The Newcastle defender said: “Training is really hard, intense, so competitive, but at the same time it’s enjoyable and feels fun. We have a leaderboard. Each player gets points if you win a game, be that possession or a small-sided match, and it’s reviewed every month. We have a sit-down meeting and whoever is top gets a reward of the manager’s choice.

“I will tell you who is at the top, but not at the bottom. Dwight Gayle is top. If he loses a game, he’s miserable.”

In our view, Gayle deserves huge credit for putting in the work, as he isn’t exactly a favourite under Howe.

Since the 44-year-old arrived on Tyneside, the former Crystal Palace striker has only made two Premier League appearances, totalling eight minutes of action.

Despite the fact Howe clearly doesn’t have much faith in him, it speaks volumes about Gayle’s character that he continues to give 100% in training.

Dwight Gayle must leave Newcastle

In our view, Gayle must leave Newcastle this summer.

At the age of 32, he doesn’t have much time left in his career, so he needs to make the most of it.

As we saw in the 2016/17 campaign, when he scored 23 goals in 32 Championship appearances, Gayle clearly knows how to be prolific in England’s second tier.

Therefore, we believe he should drop down a division, and play out the latter stages of his career making his mark in the Championship.

Gayle is far too clinical to be wasting his time on Newcastle’s bench.

With millions expected to be spent on a marquee striker this summer, Gayle must find himself a new club.
