Tottenham midfielder would benefit from more time at Aston Villa and not less.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino told The Guardian at the weekend that the club have an option to recall Josh Onomah from Aston Villa next month.

Onomah has become a regular in the Aston Villa team and is benefiting from playing on a regular basis.

Going back to Tottenham would be a bad move for Onomah right now, but even in the summer it could be too soon for a player who is still clearly a work in progress.

Josh Onomah of Aston Villa looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Birmingham City and Aston Villa at St Andrews (stadium) on October 29, 2017 in Birmingham, England.

Onomah has scored three times in 19 Championship games, 13 of which have been starts.

It has been a decent return, but there have been as many matches in which he has disappointed as where he has impressed, and more consistency is needed.

For Onomah to get consistency he needs stability, and this is why Tottenham should instead be granting him an extra year at Villa.

If Spurs would agree this now it would help Onomah and give him some direction, knowing that his loan spell has more longevity to it.

Onomah was part of England’s under-20 World Cup winning side in the summer and is a player with a lot of potential, but he’s not yet close to being at the level Tottenham need him to be.

At just 20, there is no need for them to rush him back to sit on the bench, and Spurs should give him an extra year at Villa instead to improve and learn more about himself as a player.
