Tottenham Hotspur are away in Barcelona for a mid-season break.
According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino visited Espanyol to watch them in action against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday evening.
Spurs hammered Everton 4-0 in the Premier League on Saturday evening, and with no midweek game, manager Pochettino has decided to take his players away.
Tottenham have jetted out to Barcelona for a mid-season break, or ‘warm weather training’, with Pochettino treating his players to some sunshine after the hectic winter period.
Now, the Daily Mail report that Pochettino took the opportunity to go and visit former club Espanyol, watching their game against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday evening.
It’s claimed that Pochettino’s staff were also in attendance, watching on as Athletic claimed a 1-1 draw, with Inaki Williams cancelling out Gerard Moreno’s opener for the hosts.
Given that he both players for and managed Espanyol, the likelihood is that Pochettino was simply visiting his former club whilst he was able to make a rare in-season trip to Barcelona.
However, the presence of his entire staff may just spark rumours that he was watching players involved, with goalscorer Williams one potential target given his pace and versatility in the final third.
Espanyol goalkeeper Pau Lopez spent last season out on loan at Tottenham, and with question marks over Michel Vorm’s future, Pochettino may well keep tabs on the Spaniard with a view to bringing him back to the club in the future – but for now, an innocent trip to his former club appears to be the most likely reason for his attendance.
