Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, journalist Ian McGarry has shared Edu’s view on Mikel Arteta’s future as the Arsenal manager after the Gunners’ unceremonious Europa League exit

Arsenal were dumped out of the European competition on Thursday by Villarreal, and as you can imagine, the defeat to Unai Emery’s side saw many fans and pundits question Arteta’s job.

McGarry says that different people within the club have different views on Arteta’s future, but one man who is keen for him to stay is Edu.

“We’re getting different views from differing parties from within the club. It’s certainly information that I’ve been given that Edu, who has not been at the club that long as Sporting Director is very much in Arteta’s corner,” McGarry said.

“This isn’t that surprising as he was responsible for appointing him, and he’s saying that he definitely stays regardless of how they finish the season, not that there’s much season left to finish, and despite the fact Arsenal won’t play European football next season, which is the first time in the quarter of a century that will happen.”

As McGarry says, it’s not all that surprising to hear that Edu is backing Arteta considering he was the one who appointed him.

Whether or not Arteta is the right man for the job is certainly up for debate, but it’s hard to make a case that he is after Thursday.

However, it doesn’t seem as though he’ll be sacked anytime soon, so let’s hope he manages to turn things around next season.
