If not for Hugo Lloris, things would’ve got very ugly for Tottenham Hotspur last night.
Spurs recorded their second Premier League defeat of the campaign by losing 2-0 away to Manchester United.
But it could and would’ve been a far more crushing scoreline for Tottenham if not for Lloris.
The French goalkeeper, a £12 million signing in 2012 [Reuters], posted a string of stunning saves to keep out the Red Devils.
Football London gave him a 9/10 rating for his performance which, given the result, ought to indicate what a influential figure he was in keeping the scoreline to a minimum.
And Jonathan Woodgate has lavished praise on Lloris.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the former Tottenham powerhouse said: “That is an incredible save! I thought it was in. A strong hand from Lloris and it’s another fantastic save from the Frenchman.”
On this form, Lloris is one of the Premier League’s finest goalkeepers, up there with the best of them.
But consistency is what probably keeps him out of the conversation when it comes to comparisons to players like Alisson.
Against Arsenal earlier this month, the former Lyon keeper had a stinker and made a mistake which saw Gabriel Jesus make it 2-1 in what wound up being a 3-1 defeat by the Lilywhites’ – their first of the campaign.
Consistency is what’ll always separate the wheat from the chaff and although Lloris is hardly in the latter bracket, he isn’t in the former either despite performances like this at Old Trafford.
