Incredible stats show just how much Lamela is buying into Pochettino’s philosophy

The Tottenham Hotspur forward delivered a superb statistical performance. As ever, the question is whether he can keep it up.

Erik Lamela has blown hot and cold so often it would be meaningless to assess whether his latest display means he will finally come good for Spurs.

But an isolated look at Lamela’s performance against Liverpool certainly makes for pleasant viewing where Tottenham are concerned.

Indeed, the Argentine shone in four key areas v the Reds, according to Opta stats – and two of them were defensive.

First off, Lamela created more chances than any other Spurs player, one of which was a tremendous reverse pass for Harry Kane’s first goal against Liverpool. The 22-year-old also completed 12 overall passes in the final third, just one less than Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen – who topped that particular statistical department for Tottenham.

But, most intriguingly, Lamela won three interceptions at Liverpool, only one less than the highest Spurs total – and five tackles, the highest tally bar none.

What that does tell you about the north London star’s long-term contribution at White Hart Lane is that he is buying into Mauricio Pochettino’s philosophy. The Tottenham boss has got his side pressing high up the pitch and training their fitness and intensity.

And, right now, young Lamela is the very embodiment of both those facets of Pochettino’s system.
