Speaking on the Football Cliches Podcast, Labour leader Kier Starmer has been discussing his loves and hates of football, and inevitably, he’s touched on his beloved Arsenal.

Starmer grew up as an Arsenal fan, and he’s been a season ticket holder at the Emirates for many years.

It’s not often that you hear the Leader of the Opposition on a football podcast, but Starmer clearly knows his stuff when it comes to The Beautiful Game.

Starmer was very optimistic about the future at Arsenal, claiming that Mikel Arteta is building a brilliant team, reserving special praise for Gabriel Martinelli, Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka.

What’s Starmer said about Saka, Smith Rowe and Martinelli?

Starmer gave the three Arsenal youngsters plenty of praise.

“At the moment, we’re building, in the Arsenal team at the moment there’s a brilliant team being built up, I really feel, with the young players, they’ve been incredible, Smith Rowe, Martinelli and Saka, these are incredibly talented players that are beginning to play well together and that’s brilliant to watch,” Starmer said.

Bright future

Whether or not you agree with his politics, it has to be said that Starmer is spot on about this Arsenal trio.

The Gunners have three incredible mercurial talents coming through here, and as the Labour leader says, they’re now learning how to play well together at the top level.

Mikel Arteta may not have had the most successful tenure of any Arsenal boss, but in five years’ time, don’t be shocked if these three are leading the London club to major honours.

With Saka and Smith Rowe also being England internationals, who knows? Maybe they’ll even be invited to a party at Downing Street if they can win the World Cup for England in Qatar.
