Gary Neville had said on Sky Sports News that Leeds United and Manchester United meeting on the first day of next season at Old Trafford could be ‘incredible’.

The Premier League’s fixture list dropped for next term, and both Leeds and Manchester United may be feeling that they have a tricky task on opening day.

Leeds coped brilliantly in their first season back in the Premier League, and held the Red Devils to a 0-0 draw in their most recent meeting.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men were heavily beaten on their last trip to Old Trafford, though.

And Neville is hoping that a full house can watch the highly intriguing game pan out.

“I just hope that Priti Patel and her ministers rather than concentrating on booing England players actually allow fans back in the stadium for that game so that we can get a proper atmosphere,” he said.

“It’ll be a fantastic game. Leeds being back in the Premier League were an absolute joy to watch in every single game that I watched them.

“Manchester United had a good Premier League season and if we can get close to a full house it’ll just be an incredible welcome back to fans in the stadium in terms of capacities.

“We’ve seen the announcement that they will be fuller at Ascot and Wimbledon, so I’ve not got any reason to believe that Old Trafford shouldn’t be full on the first game of the season.”

A rivalry resumes

If Leeds and Manchester United fans are allowed back into the stadiums in August then it will sure to be an amazing atmosphere.

Leeds have still not had a capacity crowd at Elland Road since they returned to the top flight, which makes last season’s achievements all the more credible.

Manchester United, meanwhile, will be under pressure to get their campaign off to a good to start, to ensure they don’t lose ground on the other potential title challengers early on.
