Gary Neville suggested on Sky Sports Football (6:37pm, October 17, 2020) that Manchester City star Raheem Sterling has proved some Liverpool fans wrong.

The former Manchester United star made the comments while he was co-commentary duty for the Premier League game between City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening.

Neville praised Sterling for adding goals to his game in recent seasons, and believes that the 25-year-old – who can operate as an attacking midfield or as a winger – has developed a lot since he left Liverpool and has proved some fans of the Merseyside club wrong.

Sterling joined the Citizens from the Reds in the summer of 2015 for an initial transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £44 million.

Neville said about Sterling to match commentator Martin Tyler on Sky Sports Football (6:37pm, October 17, 2020): “It’s incredible, Martin. You talked about before when he was at Liverpool.

“It wasn’t a foregone conclusion that he was going to come to City. People of Liverpool would have said, ‘I am not sure that he is going to become world class, certainly not do what he is doing’.

“But under the instruction and guidance of Pep Guardiola, he has turned into a fantastic player.”

Sterling played well when he was at Liverpool, but, according to TEAMtalk, he scored 23 goals in 129 appearances for the Premier League club.

The England international was a very young player then, and at City, especially under manager Pep Guardiola, he has taken his game to another level and scores goals for fun.

According to WhoScored, Sterling has scored two goals and provided one assist in four Premier League matches for City so far this season, while in 2019-20 he scored 20 goals and gave one assist in the league and scored 17 goals and provided 10 assists in the league in 2018-19.
