Speaking on the Que Golazo Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has outlined Newcastle United’s transfer strategy heading into the summer window.

This is the Magpies’ first post-takeover summer window, and as you can imagine, expectations are high.

Newcastle have, inevitably, been linked with some of the biggest names in world football, but according to Romano, the Tyneside outfit will not be on the hunt for blockbuster signings, instead, they will be looking for more players in the Bruno Guimaraes mould – young, hungry stars whose transfer value will only increase.

What’s the story?

Romano shared what he knows about Newcastle’s strategy.

“Let me say that the project is very clear. They will not be signing players based on their name. They did incredible business in January with Bruno Guimaraes, and that’s the type of statement they want, players who are young and ready to be a part of the project now, players who will be worth £35-40m now and £80-90m in a few years, so the project is pretty clear, and I think it’s really smart,” Romano said.

Slow build

Newcastle look to be building slowly, and that’s exactly how they should go about things.

Yes, the Magpies could go out and splash hundreds of millions on the biggest and best names in football, but when you’re spending that sort of money on individuals, you risk unbalancing your squad.

However, if they stay smart and sign young and hungry players, they’ll cultivate a winning atmosphere at St James’ Park, and that’s where your superstar signings can take you to the next level.

United may not make many blockbuster signings this summer, but they will be a better team once the window is over.
