Speaking on Ben and Kammy’s Proper Football Podcast, Glenn Hoddle has been discussing Gareth Southgate’s England future and how this team may look at Euro 2024.
The Three Lions were eliminated from the World Cup in heartbreaking fashion last weekend as Harry Kane’s missed penalty cost England the chance to take France into extra-time.
After England’s defeat, speculation has been rampant about Southgate’s future, with many wondering if now is the time for the former Middlesbrough boss to step aside.
However, Hoddle rightly points out that this doesn’t feel as though it’s the end of a cycle, stating that even the veteran players in the squad – such as Jordan Henderson, should still be available for selection by the time Euro 2024 rolls around.
Henderson ready for the Euros
Hoddle tipped Henderson to still be around at the Euros.
“It’s still a young squad. In two years’ time, even Henderson. Jordan Henderson might still be fit enough, he’s a fit lad. I don’t think we’ll lose any of those players and we’ll only add to it with some more younger ones. I think they’re ripe to win something,” Hoddle said.
Every chance
Henderson will be 34 by the time the next Euros roll around, but even at that age he has every chance of getting into the England squad.
There aren’t a whole host of young midfielders lining up to take his spot, and as one of the fittest players in the Premier League, you have to fancy him to maintain his level.
Factor in that Henderson is also a great leader and an incredible presence in the dressing room and you have a player who is invaluable at international level.
