‘In this side’: Wright says Arsenal are missing one thing they used to have lots of

Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, former England defender Mark Wright has been discussing Arsenal with his former teammate David Seaman.

It’s no secret that Arsenal have gotten off to a poor start this season. They’ve scored just two goals in five games and they’ve been playing some pretty poor football.

There are plenty of reasons why Arsenal have been underperforming thus far, but Wright believes one of the biggest issues Mikel Arteta’s side has is a lack of leaders in the team.

What’s been said?

Wright gave Seaman his honest view on this current iteration of Arsenal.

“The side you played in, we all knew, they used to say boring, boring Arsenal, but you weren’t boring they were strong and were after people. In your side they had captains all over the side, but in this side they don’t. If they let them play nice football they can, but who is going to let them? I just don’t seen any strength or any leaders. No strength to say we can grind out a result,” Wright said.

He’s right

Sadly, we can’t disagree with anything Wright says here.

During their most successful days Arsenal had so many leaders in their team. Tony Adams, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Martin Keown, even Seaman himself just to name a few.

Now, who do they have? Even club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doesn’t seem like a great leader, while players such as Granit Xhaka are much too reckless to be considered role models for the young players coming through.

Arsenal have a real leadership vacuum at the moment, and it’s really hard to see how that will change anytime soon.
