Tottenham Hotspur could really do with a new right-wing-back right now.

Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal have struggled massively this season, while Antonio Conte seemingly just doesn’t fancy Djed Spence.

Luckily, it sounds as though reinforcements are on the way in the January transfer window as links to a number of players in this position have emerged.

One player Tottenham have reportedly been keen on is Denzel Dumfries, and interestingly, Spurs could already have had this player years ago.

Indeed, according to Lyall Thomas who was speaking on Last Word on Spurs, Tottenham looked at signing Dumfries during the Mauricio Pochettino era, but they turned him down because they didn’t think he was ready at that point in time.

Spurs looked at Dumfries

Thomas shared what he knows about the Dutchman and Tottenham.

“We mention Dumfries, this is a player Spurs are certainly aware of. Dumfries is an interesting one because he’s played at Inter. He’s one the Premier League have been aware of for a while. He was at PSV before and did well there. I think Tottenham were looking at him when he was at PSV, I remember that actually. In the Pochettino days they had a look at that, but they didn’t think he was quite ready,” Thomas said.

Wasn’t needed

Spurs turned down Dumfries a few years ago, and while that looks like a real error now, at that point in time he wasn’t needed.

Let’s not forget, both Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier were doing stellar jobs for Pochettino at right-back during his time in charge, while Kyle Walker-Peters was also coming through and making an impact.

Dumfries, quite simply, wasn’t needed at that point, but now, Spurs could really do with a player in his mould.

Tottenham may want to revisit this one in January.
