Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Amanda Staveley have been speaking to The Athletic about their vision for Newcastle, and what’s happened so far.

Interestingly, Ghodoussi made a big claim involving Liverpool, as well as Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.

What’s the story?

Well, the Newcastle co-owner believes the Magpies can reach the summit of English football within five years.

Speaking to The Athletic, Ghodoussi said: “There is no reason why Newcastle in the next five years should not be a Man City or a Man United or a Liverpool or a Chelsea.”

Now, talk about having confidence in the process!

To make such a bold statement while Newcastle could still suffer relegation to the Championship this season speaks volumes about Ghodoussi and Staveley’s confidence in their plans.

In a short space of time, Newcastle are already unrecognisable to the club owned by Mike Ashley, so there is no reason why Ghodoussi’s vision cannot be fulfilled.

Could Newcastle overtake Liverpool?

Let’s take a look at how long Manchester City needed to develop into a giant of English football, after Sheikh Mansour took over in 2008.

The Citizens first qualified for the Champions League in 2011, before going on to lift their first Premier League in 2012.

Clearly, Newcastle can achieve a lot in five years, as it only took Manchester City a similar timeframe to sit atop England’s footballing ladder.

In our view, if Fenway Sports Group (FSG) remain in charge of Liverpool for the next five years, it’s entirely possible that Newcastle leapfrog the Reds.

FSG haven’t exactly been writing cheque after cheque for Jürgen Klopp since he arrived at Anfield, so if Newcastle continue to throw millions at new signings, who knows what could happen.
