Speaking on BT Sport’s coverage of Liverpool vs Villarreal (27/4/22 7:30PM), Michael Owen has shared details of a conversation he had with James Milner about Luis Diaz after his arrival at Anfield.

Diaz only joined Liverpool in January, but he’s already cemented himself as one of the Reds’ most important players. He was trusted to start both the FA Cup and Champions League semi-finals, while he was also picked against Manchester City at the Etihad earlier this month.

Diaz has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water, and according to Owen, Milner could tell immediately just how well the Colombian would fit in.

What’s been said?

Owen shared what Milner said about Diaz.

“I think the squad now, nobody can look at it and say it’s a weak squad. Don’t get me wrong it’s hard to pick the right players, but when you have the right culture, the right belief, the great manager, everything that’s happening, it’s hard to miss. You can put anyone in this Liverpool squad and they’ve got every box ticked,” Owen said.

“I was speaking to James Milner about this new lad Diaz, and he said that within seconds he was up to speed, he looked around, as soon as he went down in training he was up, he was closing down. He said he was just a Liverpool player straight away, in the first training session,” Owen said.

Not surprising

Milner says that Diaz immediately looked at home in Liverpool training, and to be honest, that’s not surprising to hear.

Even in games, the winger looks like he’s been playing in the Premier League for years. The pressure of this big move seemingly hasn’t affected him at all, and Liverpool are benefitting from that.

Diaz has adapted to the Premier League quicker than any other player in recent memory, and he already looks like one of the signings of the season.
