Jamie Carragher has taken to Twitter to share a very bold statement about Virgil van Dijk, after the Liverpool man had a photo with Alan Hansen.

What’s the story?

Well, Van Dijk just happened to bump into Hansen after Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Atlético Madrid in the Champions League.

You can see his tweet in full below.

After reading Van Dijk’s post, Carragher went on to say that he believes the Dutchman will retire as the greatest defender the Premier League has ever seen.

When you consider the fact the likes of Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Nemanja Vidic, Jaap Stam, Marcel Desailly and others have played in the division, that is quite the claim.

You can see Carragher’s tweet on the £220,000-a-week man below.

Whether you agree with that opinion or not, it just goes to show how highly the 43-year-old rates the Liverpool No.4.

Will Virgil van Dijk end Liverpool career as Premier League’s best?

In our view, Carragher is right.

While the likes of Terry, Ferdinand and Vidic were leaders of men, they didn’t possess the technical ability of Van Dijk.

The 30-year-old can spray passes around Premier League pitches with the ease others make five-yard passes.

As we saw at Celtic, Van Dijk is also no stranger to hammering home a freekick or long-range effort.

Unfortunately for him, he rarely gets a chance at Anfield with Trent Alexander-Arnold, quite right, on set-piece duty.

That goes without mentioning his unbelievable speed, awareness, composure and reading of the game – he has absolutely everything.

If Van Dijk can secure one of two more Premier League titles, Carragher’s claim simply could not be argued against by anyone.
