Marcelo Bielsa has claimed that Steven Gerrard had a ‘brilliant step’ at Rangers ahead of his meeting with the Aston Villa boss, as he told Leeds Live.

It has been a few months since Gerrard swapped Rangers for Villa’s dugout and the Englishman has had a positive start to life in B6, as he new prepares for the visit of Bielsa’s all-action Leeds side on Wednesday night.

When Gerrard decided to leave Rangers, it sparked a big debate as to whether he was making a step up in his managerial career.

Well, in terms of the league he is now competing in, there is no doubt that he has gone up a few levels, as Leeds will testify during these coming days.

Gerrard has already faced a number of high-quality coaches since being in a Premier League dugout, from Pep Guardiola to Jurgen Klopp.

And now he will pit his tactical wits against Bielsa, as the Leeds man shared his thoughts on his opposite number.

“In Scotland, he had a brilliant step,” said Bielsa. “What he has managed this far at Aston Villa is good because he has put his stamp on the team very quickly.”

Both Villa and Leeds have had some seriously entertaining battles over the last few years, a number of them stemming from the Championship.

The last time the two teams faced each other in front of a packed-out crowd at Villa Park, the Yorkshire side came from 2-0 down to record a 3-2 win.

During that same season, Bielsa also allowed Villa to score an uncontested goal after a controversial opening goal from Leeds which resulted in a melee breaking out between both teams.

Either way, expect more entertainment on Wednesday night when both teams will be looking to play on the front foot.
