Newcastle have pinched Paul McLaren from Manchester City as Eddie Howe adds an experienced cog to his backroom staff.

What’s the story?

Well – according to Fabrizio Romano – the Magpies have hired McLaren to be their new Head of Scouting.

The talent spotter will leave his role at the Etihad Stadium to officially start work at Newcastle in July, meaning he will be in place for the summer transfer window.

It is mentioned by the Chronicle that Dan Ashworth sees McLaren as a vital part of his “masterplan” at St James’ Park, which should excite Newcastle supporters.

Manchester City play host to some of England’s brightest young talents, producing the likes of Romeo Lavia – who is now a £40m target for Arsenal, according to the Daily Mail – as well as Rory Delap and Rico Lewis.

It is unknown which of these talents McLaren personally scouted, although the vast amount of precocious talent at the Etihad Stadium right now suggests he did a fine job in his role as Youth Scout.

Newcastle fans should be excited by McLaren

Of course, some fans find it hard to get too giddy about a backroom staff member – most of their excitement is reserved for shiny new signings made in regards to the playing squad.

However, infrastructure is key for a top side to operate effectively, and if someone as accomplished as Ashworth believes McLaren is a vital appointment, then supporters should feel very optimistic about what he could bring to Tyneside.

As we’ve seen in the past, there have been plenty of financially strong sides who don’t have a clue what they’re doing behind the scenes.

Therefore, it should encourage Newcastle fans to see some of the best recruiters arrive at St James’ Park to make sure PIF’s money is being spent effectively in the market.
