Speaking on Vibe with Five, Danny Murphy has been discussing Cody Gakpo after Liverpool seemingly agreed a deal to sign the winger.
PSV have announced that they have struck a deal to sell Gakpo to the Reds, and now, we’re just waiting for the player to be pictured in a Liverpool shirt.
This deal has seemingly come from out of nowhere, but, according to Murphy, this one may have been in the pipeline for a little while.
Indeed, according to the pundit, Virgil van Dijk will have had a part to play in this deal, stating that the defender may well have had a word with Gakpo about coming to Anfield while on World Cup duty.

Van Dijk has had a word
Murphy gave his theory about van Dijk and Gakpo.
“Listen, I think Virgil van Dijk will have waded in on this one. I think Virgil’s been in his ear, telling him what an amazing club it is. But every Liverpool fan, if they didn’t know about him and they haven’t seen much of him, they should be excited,” Murphy said.
Agent Virgil
This sort of stuff is absolutely rife at international level.
Jadon Sancho was perhaps the most obvious example as he even admitted that Liverpool and Manchester United players were trying to sway him during Euro 2020, while Jude Bellingham was seemingly getting the same treatment at the World Cup.
Virgil van Dijk has now seemingly gotten in on the act, and he must be a really solid salesman as the Gakpo deal has now seemingly gotten over the line.
Who knows? Perhaps van Dijk could have a future in the game as a Sporting Director. After all, he looks to have done a great job with Gakpo.
