Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Jurgen Klopp has been speaking about Newcastle United after their takeover.
Overnight last week, Newcastle became one of the richest clubs in world football and immediately they’ve been linked to some of the biggest names in the game.
Many expect there to be something of a revolution at St James’ Park over the coming years and Klopp is exactly the same.
Indeed, the German has stated that Newcastle will be guaranteed a spot in the Champions League in a few years, claiming that in five, six or seven years United will be a new superpower in football.
What’s been said?
Klopp was speaking about Newcastle.
“A few months ago, we had an issue with 12 clubs making a Super League, it didn’t happen, and rightly so, but this is kind of creating as super team if you want, it’s the same. A guaranteed spot in the Champions League, in a few years’ time, not immediately. With how FFP is used nowadays, nobody knows if it still exists or if it will change. Newcastle fans will love it of course, but for the rest of us it just means there’s a new superpower,” Klopp said.
The Liverpool boss spoke about Newcastle again later in his press conference.
“Of course, more important than money is good decisions. I’m not concerned about it, we won the Champions League two years ago and there were already two countries involved in the competition with great teams. Honestly, I’m not concerned, you all know it, but you need our words. It will not happen overnight, Newcastle aren’t safe now in the league, it’s not 100 per cent sure they’ll stay in the league,” Klopp said.
“I think there will be a lot of changes in the next couple of years. It’s a massive project, but it’s football still, so we can win games against them in the future. But, it’s clear and we all know it, in five, six or seven years’ time, Newcastle are a new superpower or an old superpower because they were successful in the past. The new owners have enough money to buy the whole league, so maybe they fancy that at one point.”

New superpower
Newcastle becoming one of the game’s biggest superpowers is a scary prospect.
The Magpies have the wealth available to them to dominate world football in years to come, and while it will take time, there is something of an inevitability about Newcastle’s future success.
As Klopp says, good decisions are more important than money, but in football, money does eventually solve most problems.
