Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, Petr Cech has been discussing who he believes has been the best goalkeeper at the World Cup.
There have been some outstanding goalkeeping performances over in Qatar. Morocco’s Bono is yet to concede a goal from an opposition player, Jordan Pickford has been imperious for England, while Dominik Livakovic’s penalty heroics saw Croatia through against Japan.
However, Cech has chosen Wojciech Szczesny as his pick for the best goalkeeper at this tournament, stating that the Poland number one has given his team a chance in every single game.
Interestingly, this comes just days after Szczesny was linked with a move back to north London with Tottenham Hotspur.
Cech hails Szczesny
The former Chelsea goalie spoke highly of the Juventus star.
“I think, for example, if you look at Poland and you see Szczesny in every game. He pretty much kept them in the tournament. Of course, they were knocked out, but in every game he gave the team the chance to get something out of it and to progress and to win,” Cech said.
Brilliant
Cech is absolutely right about Szczesny, he almost single-handedly carried Poland through that group stage.
Heading into this tournament, all eyes were on Robert Lewandowski in this Poland team, but after the Barcelona man struggled to make an impact, focus quickly shifted to Szczesny.
The ex-Arsenal goalie was absolutely brilliant between the sticks for the European outfit, and while he was eventually undone by two incredible strikes by Kylian Mbappe on Sunday, he can’t be too disheartened by the way his tournament panned out.
