Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Thiago Alcantara is ‘in contention’ to start for Liverpool tonight, as per his comments in the Guardian.
Thiago has only just returned from injury for Liverpool, and he featured for them against Newcastle United from the bench.
The £20 million Spaniard (BBC Sport) immediately injected more creativity into Liverpool’s play, even though they only managed to pick up a 0-0 draw at St. James’ Park.
His cameo performance has led to Liverpool fans urging Klopp to start the central midfielder this evening, against Southampton.
But Klopp has kept his cards close to his chest and suggested that Liverpool will cope, even if the Spaniard is only fit enough to be a substitute again at St. Mary’s.
“Unfortunately I have not known Thiago that long,” Klopp said.
“A few months only. He played 20 minutes for us [at Newcastle] which was special and was about creating, which is his best skill. He has only had two sessions with the team [since his injury].

“We will see, he played 20 minutes against Newcastle and I don’t know how he’ll react. We will see. He has a chance.
“The boys who have done the job in midfield so far [in his absence] did exceptionally well so it is not that we cannot survive if Thiago does not start the next game. But it is very good he is now fit and obviously in contention. I like that a lot.”
Thiago’s return has come at a timely moment for Liverpool, as their midfield numbers have been depleted, with Fabinho having to play in defence.
There is a feeling that Thiago could have a key role to play for the Reds, as they look to defend their Premier League title.
Liverpool have not looked the unstoppable force they were last term so far this campaign, but with Thiago’s quality and composure added to their midfield they should become an even more dangerous side in future weeks.
