Speaking to Off The Ball, Mark Lawrenson has been discussing James Milner and his chances of starting in the Champions League final in Paris.
Liverpool have something of an injury crisis in the midfield heading into the Champions League final this weekend. Thiago picked up a knock against Wolves at the weekend, while Fabinho has been out of action for a few weeks now.
Lawrenson believes that Liverpool may have to field something of a makeshift midfield against Real Madrid, and he believes there’s a genuine chance that James Milner will start the final despite his limited appearances in the competition this season.
What’s been said?
Lawrenson spoke about Liverpool’s situation in the midfield.
“I think Fabinho is struggling as well, up until yesterday I don’t think he’s been on the training ground, so he’s another one that is a worry for them. Keita is ok and Henderson will be in there obviously,” Lawrenson said.
“Milner, could he start the Champions League final?” Lawrenson was then asked.
“I don’t think so, although you never know with Klopp. He trusts him, so maybe that’s what he wants when he looks ast the other players and thinks let’s just be solid in midfield and be difficult to play against and let the front three do their bit against Real Madrid. I don’t know who else he could play in all honesty, I don’t think he’ll throw the kids in, so maybe Milner will start,” Lawrenson concluded.

Worse options to have
Liverpool having to play Milner in a Champions League final is far from ideal. After all, he’s only played 212 minutes in this competition all season, but, in all honesty, there are worse players to call upon.
Milner has played in two Champions League finals for the Reds. He won’t let the occasion get to him, and let’s not forget, he’s a quality player.
It’s hard to believe, but Milner actually holds the record for the most assists in a single Champions League campaign, so he could actually be a difference-maker in this final.
Let’s see who Klopp trusts to start in Paris.
