Paul Merson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (17/04/21 at 2:50 pm) that West Ham are in a ‘little bit of trouble’ ahead of their showdown with Chelsea.

The Hammers currently occupy the final Champions League spot in the Premier League table and face off against fifth-placed Chelsea on Saturday.

But David Moyes’ men go into that match having shot themselves in the foot against Newcastle last time out.

And Merson is hoping they can still achieve European football, but worries about what will happen if Chelsea walk away with the points.

“They play Chelsea now and if Chelsea win that game then I think West Ham could be in a little bit of trouble,” said Merson.

“But fair play to them. I hope they hang around and, at least, they get into the Europa. They have done great this season.”

In the backdrop of the proposed European Super League, this weekend’s showdown has extra significance.

West Ham aren’t one of the clubs who are looking to breakaway into a Super League, and given that they occupy a top-four spot ahead of the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs, it will make for interesting viewing.

Both West Ham and Leicester, who are also in the top four, will want to stick two fingers at those who seemingly think they are entitled to such things even though they don’t even have European success.
