Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter after Vincent Kompany guided Burnley to a 1-0 win in his first competitive game in charge.

What’s the story?

Well, the Belgian got off to the perfect start last night, as he guided the Clarets to a 1-0 win over Huddersfield in the Championship curtain-raiser.

Burnley didn’t just scrape the three points, though – they toyed with Huddersfield in some style.

According to OptaJoe, the Clarets completed 506 passes against the Terriers, a club-record tally for a league game.

Huddersfield’s two shots were also the fewest Burnley have faced in a league match since November 2011, when Ipswich only mustered up two shots on their goal as well.

After hearing what OptaJoe discovered, Lineker posted the following tweet on Twitter.

We simply cannot disagree – it was a hugely impressive start for Kompany.

His task was made even harder after losing Dwight McNeil to Everton, but the Clarets certainly didn’t appear to be affected by the 22-year-old’s departure as they passed Huddersfield off the park.

Burnley have long held a reputation for playing unattractive, defensive football, but it seems as if the 36-year-old is starting to change the way his side are viewed by the masses.

Vincent Kompany can transform Burnley

In our view, Kompany has all the tools required to do something very special at Turf Moor.

He spent a number of years working under a managerial genius in Pep Guardiola, a man who has also helped Mikel Arteta become a manager of his own at Arsenal.

Additionally, Kompany is a natural leader, who instantly commands the respect of others when entering a room.

With those two elements combined, and the backing of those on the board at Turf Moor, we see no reason why he can’t guide Burnley straight back into the Premier League.
