Speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Alan Shearer has been full of praise for Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Shearer was giving his view on some of the brightest young talents in the Premier League for the ‘Rising Stars’ series, and inevitably, he looked towards Alexander-Arnold as a glowing example.
While the right-back is now very much an established player, we mustn’t forget that he’s still only 23 years old, and he remains one of the biggest young prospects in the country.
What’s Shearer said?
Shearer was full of praise for Alexander-Arnold and his assist stats.
“He’s already into double figures for assists this season averaging one every two matches and he creates a chance every 30 minutes. Impressive stats for a defender,” Shearer said.
“Under Jurgen Klopp he has plenty of licence to get forward. The assist for Sadio Mane against Burnley is the case in point. What stood out for me is the quick look to see where Mane is before finding him with a perfectly weighted pass.
“His vision combined with an ability to pick out a pass is exceptional. As we saw against Chelsea, as soon as he received the ball he wanted to go forward, and he found Mo Salah who provided a classy finish. Liverpool are scoring for fun this season and with players like Alexander-Arnold in the team, you can see why.”

Ridiculous
Shearer says that Alexander-Arnold’s assist stats are impressive, but we’d like to use another word – ridiculous.
This is a right-back, and he’s the top assister in the Premier League. That’s not normal.
This is a player who has a once in a generation eye for a pass and his execution is also absolutely spot on every single time.
Don’t be surprised if Alexander-Arnold breaks a number of assist-related records before he hangs up his boots.
